A Minnesota man is facing a criminal vehicle homicide charge after a Fourth of July fatal accident that killed a Fremont man.
Matthew D. Hartmann, 23, was killed as he was walking across Minnesota Highway 61 near Lutsen, Minn., shortly before 11 p.m. Friday, the Duluth News Tribune reported in its Monday edition.
Authorities said Hartmann was struck and killed by Leroy Eugene Strandberg, 42, of Eveleth, Minn. Strandberg has been charged with one count of criminal vehicle homicide and two counts of child endangerment.
A preliminary breath test found Standberg had a blood alcohol concentration of .13, Cook County Attorney Tim Scannell said. Minnesota’s legal limit is .08. A blood sample was taken to give authorities a more accurate result.
Scannell said Standberg had two children in his vehicle when the accident happened.
Hartmann, the son of Doug and Kathy Hartmann, is a 2003 graduate of Fremont High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., in 2007 and had been accepted into Creighton Medical School.
